From Childhood Curiosity to Medical School: Alec’s Journey
Alec shares how a childhood dream became a medical degree, and how he’s making medicine more accessible through video.
From a childhood dream to the last months of med school
My name is Alec, and I am currently in the last months of my medical degree. My journey into and through medicine has been a challenging but rewarding one. Since I was a kid I always wanted to be a doctor. It started by playing with a plastic stethoscope as a kid, and later developed into a love for science, particularly biology. I remember when I was about 12 I had made a little notebook called my ‘doctor book’ which I filled with a bunch of science facts.
The path into medicine
After high school I decided to do an undergraduate degree that lasted four years in biomedical sciences before applying and getting accepted into med school.
Making medicine accessible through video
I have always had an interest in video making and making medicine accessible and lighthearted, which is why at the end of my second year I decided to make videos online. The videos I made were humorous takes on the life of medical students, and educational videos. I particularly enjoy creating educational videos that explain medical concepts not only for medical students, but also for non-medical audiences, since healthcare affects all of us in everyday life and having a solid baseline understanding is important. I’m excited to be a Doctor in the next couple months, and to be able to help people!
